Finishing touches
“The Fretless Wonder”, my 5-string high C bass from UNICORNbass gets it’s finishing touches by master luthier Christian Olsson. Soon the wait will be over!
This was an interesting project. Jazzfusion in 6/8 time. I haven’t played in anything other than the usual 4/4 for ages so would I find a working groove? Apparently the time studies back in the ’90s stuck ’cause I felt at home effortless right away. Cooking up this groove in a couple of minutes and sent a early sketch to mr Bennborn for review. He loved the bassline so from there it was just a matter of printing a good take.
The Watson SC-5 modified by UNICORNbass was used as usual. Fitted with the GruvGear Fretwraps. They’re small but addictive, I don’t record without them.
The pickups together with the electronics Christian Olsson put in the bass are a pure joy. Versatile and dead quiet! Ran the bass through the JoeMeek FloorQ straight into the Apogee Duet II and the DAW used is Presonus Studio One.
Original liner notes:
Let’s take six musicians and make something in 6/8ths – “Take Six” it is!
I’m very proud to present to you an original, spring-welcoming, smooth-flowing jazz piece, with some of the finest (jazz) musicians here on SC.
My immense gratitude goes to these guys jumping aboard without hesitation on basis of a sketchy idea I had – to forge a six man collaboration, upping the stakes of complexity. Coming out at the other end with another, great learning experience to behold and a track I will cherish.
Enjoy!

Monday – Feat Wayne Morley (tpt) & Jonny Trobro (bass)
Here’s a first mix of a collaboration I had the opportunity to be part of.
Mark Dorricott on the Keyboards and programming.
Wayne Morley on trumpet.
Me on 5 string Watson SC 5 string bass, modified by UNICORNbass. Recorded with the B7K from Darkglass Electronics, Wonderlove from 3leaf Audio and the FloorQ by JoeMeek.
This week I had the opportunity to work on two different Soundcloud collaboration projects. First song, a jazzy tune in 6/8 featuring both vibraphone and clarinet. Not the everyday instrumentation these days. It was great fun to play in something else than the standard 4/4 time. I found a groove that worked really good with the drums. For this song I used a straight forward clean sound, using only the FloorQ compressor when recording. More effects was used on the second song. This track is also the first with a new collaborator on Soundcloud. Since it’s a track in the “jazzy lounge” genre I aimed for a more synthy sounding bass, running the bass through the B7K distortion from Darkglass Electronics and through some heavy filtering from the Wonderlove by 3leaf Audio. Released in the cloud soon…
A short walk through of the gear used to record “Winter Sun”.
